On Sunday, a man fell to his death on Grosser Mythen in the canton of Schwyz. His relatives received expert care. The mountain is considered extremely dangerous.
Shortly after 11 a.m. on Sunday morning, the Schwyz cantonal police operations center received a report that a man had fallen around 200 meters into the depths of Grosser Mythen.
Rega was only able to rescue the 56-year-old mountaineer dead in the impassable terrain. The cantonal police informed about this in a message late on Sunday afternoon. The Care Team of the Canton of Schwyz looked after the relatives.
The Great Mythen – a very dangerous mountain
The Grosse Mythen (around 1,900 meters above sea level) is the landmark of the canton of Schwyz and the path to its top is considered by many to be the most dangerous hiking trail in Switzerland. Not because of its technical difficulty, but because of the number of fatal accidents. According to figures from the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), there has been around one fatal accident per year since 1998, wrote “20 Minuten” in an earlier accident.
Hikers can reach the summit via a serpentine path with over 47 bends and from there look out over the Glarus and Uri Alps and Lake Lucerne. Over 40,000 people every year don’t want to miss this. But be careful: the steep path can be dangerous in wet and foggy conditions.
