The fire on the corner of Via Beccaria. Eight fire brigade teams were on site. Nearby buildings were evacuated. No one injured
The fire it flares up shortly after 3pm. Flames and smoke emerge from the grates on the ground right in the center of Milan, on the corner between Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Cesare Beccaria. They rush to the spot eight fire engineswhile tourists and passers-by move away (and film the column of thick black smoke with their cell phones).
At the moment there are no people involved. According to the very first information, the fire had hit some electrical cables under a cavity in the building on the corner. The building and other nearby buildings were evacuated for safety, while the entire area was cordoned off to allow firefighters to work safely. By late afternoon the fire was put out.
«We heard a very loud bang and the light went out», says the sales assistant of a shop in Corso Vittorio Emanuele. “We went out into the street and saw the fire” adds the woman, who together with her colleagues moved away from the area to escape the smoke. «You could see the flames from the grates», adds a resident, who left the building where he lives, having been left – like many in the area – without electricity for a few hours.
