Microsoft-backed OpenAI‘s famous chatbot ChatGPT is back online following an outage that affected thousands of users, the firm announced on Friday. Most users’ access was restored by 4:34 p.m. PT, according to OpenAI, however a small number of clients continued to experience difficulty until 5 p.m.
Outage tracking website Downdetector.com said ChatGPT’s services were down for about half an hour, affecting over 19,403 users as of 7:13 p.m. ET (0013 GMT on Saturday).
“Issues with ChatGPT have now been resolved,” OpenAI said in a statement on its website.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman posted on X that ChatGPT had been down for 30 minutes, adding a frown emoji and saying, “chatgpt went down for 30 mins today ???? we are much, much better at reliability than we used to be, but clearly more work in front of us. (it is now the 8th biggest website in the world according to similarweb–we have had a lot of work to do these past two years!). sorry for the inconvenience and we will get back to work.”
Open AI New Domain
OpenAI has acquired Chat.com, one of the internet’s oldest and most well-known domains, which was initially established in 1996. Beginning today, anybody typing Chat.com will be led to ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, teased the acquisition with a quick tweet that just read “Chat.com,” adding a layer of mystery to the event.
The acquisition of chat.com is part of OpenAI’s overall aim to rebrand and make its products more accessible to a worldwide audience. The transition away from the “GPT” in the domain name follows OpenAI’s release of a new series of reasoning models beginning with “o1.”
ChatGPT User Base
Since its introduction in November 2022, ChatGPT has gained 250 million weekly active users. OpenAI’s valuation has risen to $157 billion from $14 billion in 2021, with sales increasing from $0 to $3.6 billion, considerably surpassing Altman’s expectations at the time.
