Tragedy Overshadows Bayern’s Victory: Fan Collapses in Stands – Later Dies

München – During the Bayern match against Lisbon, there was an unusual silence in the stands. The reason was a medical emergency on the terrace. The spectator died in the hospital.

The victory of FC Bayern Munich in the Champions League match against Benfica Lisbon was overshadowed by a tragic event. About an hour after the final whistle, the German football record champions received the “sad news” that a fan had died on the way to the hospital. The attendee had been provided emergency medical assistance in the stands shortly after the kick-off and was then transported away.

“FC Bayern stands in mourning with the relatives,” the club wrote on its website. Out of respect, Bayern fans in the south curve refrained from their usual loud support for the team during the match. “There are definitely more important things in life than football,” said sports director Max Eberl. He noted that the fans had shown an appropriate respect with their actions.

“After the match, we didn’t celebrate much. The boys only learned about it after the game,” said coach Vincent Kompany before the death announcement was made. After the final whistle, the stadium announcer also informed the packed 75,000-capacity arena about the incident and explained why the supporters had held back their applause. The music was also more subdued than usual following the victory, which was secured by a header from Jamal Musiala.

“When something like this happens, it is also a beautiful sign of solidarity that the fans don’t throw their own party but show a sign of humanity,” commented Bayern veteran Thomas Müller.

Captain Manuel Neuer also expressed his condolences. “We are very sorry, and we didn’t celebrate wildly in the locker room after this victory,” the goalkeeper stated. “We feel for the fan or the person.”
