Will the German record champions add more personnel during the winter break? Christoph Freund talks about his club's squad – and becomes clear when asked a question.
Sports director Christoph Freund does not see FC Bayern under any pressure to sign additional players. “It's really the case that we're very happy with the current team. We don't feel any pressure to do anything because the boys are performing really well and developing well. So we don't have any pressure for the winter transfer period,” said the Austrian on Wednesday evening on DAZN.
Basically, “different scenarios” are always discussed internally, reported Freund and added: “The important thing is that some important players have contract constellations that are no longer valid for that long. That's the focus, and we're having discussions.”
Captain Manuel Neuer and original Bavarian Thomas Müller are only tied until the end of the current season, as are Joshua Kimmich, Leroy Sané, Alphonso Davies and the additional players Eric Dier and Sven Ulreich. “We are currently concentrating on the squad we have available. There is a lot to do,” said Freund. What's more: “That's very, very important, and that's where the focus is. Of course we're having discussions about that.”
Also with Jamal Musiala, whose contract runs until 2026. “Jamal is a very important player. It's no secret that we want to keep him for a long time,” Freund repeated the well-known Bayern position and added: “It would be very nice if we could extend Jamal for a long time.”
DAZN presenter Laura Wontorra asked: Does that mean that Bayern fans could be prepared for a Christmas present in the form of Musiala's contract extension? Friend: “We'll see.” Wontorra further asked: Or whether that even means that Florian Wirtz's signing could be announced at Christmas? Then Freund became very clear: “That's definitely not what it means. Flo Wirtz is currently in Leverkusen, is playing a very, very good season, and we are concentrating on the squad we have available.”
