Support for the Belgian was therefore ultimately provided by her own Renew Europe group (liberals and centrists), the EPP (Christian Democrats), the socialists of the S&D, the Greens/ALE and the sovereignist conservatives of ECR. Silent until the beginning of the evening, the CD&V, Belgian member of the EPP, congratulated Hadja Lahbib. “During her hearing, she demonstrated skill in answering critical questions,” said MEP Liesbet Sommen. “I expect her to be able to act with empathy and determination, with the necessary funds and support, when Europeans are hit again by a climate catastrophe, as is currently the case in Valencia or more recently in Central Europe.

“There is also a lot of work to be done in the area of equality, in particular for people with disabilities, LGBTQI+ and women (notably in the labor market), so that Europe plays a concrete leadership role in line,” added Liesbet Sommen.

November 12 will be the main day of hearings, during which the candidates for the six vice-presidents of the Commission will be heard. After the hearing of all the candidates by the European Parliament, the college as a whole will have to obtain the support of all MEPs, probably during the plenary session at the end of November. If the procedure does not suffer any delays, the new European Commission could be set up on December 1.
