Taxpayer Protection Pledge signer and former U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte won the race for New Hampshire governor Tuesday night, vindicating a campaign that was laser-focused on maintaining the New Hampshire advantage of zero income tax and zero sales tax.

Democrat Mayor Joyce Craig instead chose to double down on reinstating New Hampshire’s income tax, which is set to phase out on January 1 thanks to the steady hand of Gov. Sununu and Republicans in the state legislature. Craig’s support for an income tax is widely viewed to have been her Achilles heel in her failed bid for governor.

Craig campaigned with radical Massachusetts Democrat Governor Maura Healy just one day before the general election, demonstrating a “tax-and-spend” vision for New Hampshire that stands in stark contrast to the preferences of its voters. The slogan “Don’t Mass Up New Hampshire” resonated loudly with New Hampshirites long accustomed to a low-tax, liberty-loving environment.

Throughout the campaign, Ayotte remained committed to making New Hampshire the 8th no-income-tax state.

“We have something very special in New Hampshire — no income (tax), no sales tax, education freedom is so important in our state,” said incoming Governor Ayotte when announcing her gubernatorial bid. “So I’m running for governor to make sure that New Hampshire remains safe, prosperous and free.”

“Kelly Ayotte has committed to keeping New Hampshire income-tax free,” said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform. “As Senator, she kept her pledge to never raise taxes while in office, and can be trusted to do the same as governor of the Granite State.”

New Hampshire taxpayers can rely on their incoming governor to protect their pocketbooks, ensuring that will be able to freely live, work, and raise a family without fear of the government coming after their wallets.
