It was the precautionary principle that prevailed. Air France decided, Sunday November 3, 2024, to suspend until further notice flying over the Red Sea area. In the process, some planes had to turn around immediately to return to land at the departure airport, Roissy-Charles de Gaulle (Seine-Saint-Denis). Other flights already engaged have changed their itineraries.
This Monday, air connections between Paris and Réunion, Mauritius, Kenya and Madagascar have been adapted to the situation. Extensions in travel times are to be expected.
One more hour
A “luminous object at high altitude” observed by an Air France crew “in the Sudan area” pushed the airline to suspend flights over the Red Sea.
On Sunday, flights AF934 from Roissy-Charles de Gaulle to Antananarivo in Madagascar and AF814 from the same Paris airport to Nairobi in Kenya changed their flight plans. The planes returned to the tarmac from Seine-Saint-Denis while waiting to make a new departure as soon as possible. Return flights on these routes have also been postponed.
The planes linking France to Mauritius and Reunion Island were able to continue their route in adapting their itinerary.
This Monday, all these connections (flights to Reunion Island, Mauritius, Nairobi and Antananarivo) were able to resume with a modification of the route giving rise to an extension of travel time “by around an hour”, according to Air France.
