Chis weekend, images of an Iranian student undressed on the campus of a university in Tehran went around the world. According to activists on social networks, the young woman was harassed by members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards for not having worn the maghnaeh, a compulsory veil in higher institutions in Iran.
In protest, she stripped naked in front of the university and paraded in her underwear in the street.

Since the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, arrested for a veil deemed non-compliant, Iranian women have led an unprecedented revolt.

The “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement has been severely repressed, with at least 551 deaths and thousands of arrests, according to several NGOs. Islamic law in Iran imposes a strict dress code on women, and penalties for violating it increased in 2023.

Now, appearing in public in a state of “semi-nudity” can cost up to 10 years in prison. Since her arrest, rumors have emerged of the death of the student, identified as Ahou Daryaei, possibly beaten in detention.
