  • Federal Councilor Albert Rösti has distanced himself from his statement that he would “tend more towards” Donald Trump as US President.
  • He explained this to a school class in Basel.
  • On Sunday evening on RTS television in western Switzerland, he said that a Federal Councilor should not comment on elections abroad. The personal Albert Rösti went through with him.

In the RTS Tagesschau at 7:30 p.m., Federal Councilor Albert Rösti said: “I answered a student’s question rather than Albert Rösti, but I am aware that a Federal Councilor should not comment on elections abroad.”

Rösti expects Trump to bring peace in Ukraine

Rösti spoke out in favor of the ex-president and Republican presidential candidate last Monday during an exchange with students in Basel. He replied to a student that he was “leaning more towards” Trump in the US elections on November 5th.

He expects this to bring peace in Ukraine. After all, Trump is the only president who did not lead the USA into war during his four years in office. However, he also acknowledged that the candidate’s personality was problematic.

Amherd: Principle of non-interference

Rösti’s answer was subsequently criticized. The political scientist Michael Hermann, for example, described it as “problematic from a diplomatic point of view”.

Federal President Viola Amherd, on the other hand, stuck to custom on the issue and explained that it was the voters in the USA who had to decide. “We won’t interfere and will work with the democratically elected heads of state,” she told members of the Association of Foreign Press in Bern.
