From the Tennis court in Bercy to the ice rink in Angers, via the Singapore basin and the Interlagos circuit in Brazil, the sporting weekend was full of events. Léon Marchand, Ugo Humbert, Esteban Ocon and Adam Siao Him Fa have made French sport shine. Franceinfo: sport offers you a summary of the best moments of this first weekend of November.
Tennis: Zverev stops Humbert's dream at Bercy
Ugo Humbert rocked the Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy all week, but in the final, it was Alexander Zverev who showed his superiority. After eliminating Carlos Alcaraz (2nd), Jordan Thompson (28th) and Karen Khachanov (21st), the French number 1 had to face a wall for his first Masters 1000 final. In front of his audience, Messin was largely dominated by the German and lost in less than 1h15 of play (6-2, 6-2).
Alexander Zverev won his first title at Paris-Bercy on Sunday, marking his first victory in the capital, after being beaten in the Roland-Garros final by Carlos Alcaraz last June. Moreover, this seventh career Masters 1000 title allows him to overtake the Spaniard in the ATP rankings, thus becoming the new world number 2.
F1: a historic podium in Brazil with two French people
We didn't see it coming. At the end of a very intense day, marked by incessant rain in Sao Paulo, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly finished in second and third place respectively in the Brazilian Grand Prix. For the first time since 1997 (with Olivier Panis and Jean Alesi), two French people climbed onto the podium of a Formula 1 Grand Prix. An excellent result for Alpine, which moved up to sixth place in the constructors' standings.
Weaned from victory since the Spanish Grand Prix last June, Max Verstappen found a smile again at the best of times on the Interlagos circuit. Despite starting from 17th place, the Dutchman made an impressive comeback. Helped by the yellow flags and the red flag, the Red Bull driver won the Brazilian GP, taking an important step towards the title. He is now 62 points ahead of Lando Norris (McLaren) and could be crowned world champion for the fourth consecutive time in Las Vegas next week if he finishes ahead of his British rival.
Swimming: Léon Marchand masters the time in Singapore
The weeks follow one another and are similar for Léon Marchand in Asia. Well almost. In Singapore, for the third and final stage of the short course World Cup (25m), the French swimmer not only won three races in three days (100m medley, 200m medley and 400m 4 swimming), he also set new records. The Toulouse native first beat his best European mark on Thursday in the 100m medley with a time of 49″92, then on Friday shattered the world record for the 200m medley in 1'48″88. thus erased Ryan Lochte from the shelves while the American had until now held the fastest time in history since 2012.
Léon Marchand became the first Frenchman to win the general classification of the short course swimming World Cup. A few weeks before the World Championships in Budapest (from December 10 to 15)all the lights are green for the four-time Olympic champion.
Figure skating: Adam Siao Him Fa enchanted Angers
A program full of audacity. In front of his audience in Angers, and after a disappointing eighth place during the short program on Friday, Adam Siao Him Fa flew over the freestyle of the French Grand Prix of figure skating on Saturday. The Frenchman was the only one to successfully complete two quadruple jumps in his program, followed by his famous backflip.
The resident of the Nice club was not the only one to shine on the Angers ice rink. Evgeniia Lopareva (24 years old) and Geoffrey Brissaud (26 years old) also defied the odds in ice dancing. The French tandem thus beat the Italians Charlène Guignard and Marco Fabbri, double European champions and title holders in Angers, to win the competition.
Football: the Lyonnaises win the Premier League clash against PSG
First in the ranking before the match, the Parisiennes did not resist Olympique Lyonnais (1-0). On the lawn of Groupama Stadium, in front of around 15,000 spectators, Les Gones taught Paris a lesson, by storming the cage of Mary Earps, who avoided a correction to her team. Facing one of the weakest PSG in recent years, OL shot 25 times (compared to 2), and it was ultimately the former player of the capital, Tabitha Chawinga who scored the only goal of the game, on a pass from another former Parisian, Kadidiatou Diani.
The only good news for PSG in this missed afternoon was that French team striker Marie-Antoinette Katoto played again, coming on at half-time, after having missed the last two Les Bleues matches due to injury. OL take the lead in the championship with one point ahead of their opponent of the day.
