Joao Gomes was just as impressed with one Wolves player as many fans, following yesterday’s draw with Crystal Palace.
Gary O’Neil watched his side draw 2-2 with Palace at Molineux.
Many fans had hoped this would be Wolves’ first win of the season, having had so many tough fixtures to begin the 2024/25 season.
But Wolves could only manage a draw. Initially, the team showed good character to come from a goal down to lead 2-1. But poor defending saw Wolves again drop points from a winning position.
The pressure is mounting on O’Neil, who may well need to win against Southampton to stay in a job.
Against Palace, there was another great performance from Matheus Cunha.
Matheus Cunha sends message after Wolves’ draw with Crystal Palace
Cunha has been in terrific form so far this season despite the collective struggles of the team.
The Brazilian has scored four so far, and also laid on one assist, which came in yesterday’s game.
Cunha picked up the ball after a ball over the top from Santi Bueno. His first touch sent Trevoh Chalobah flying, and Cunha then played a perfect through ball to Jorgen Strand Larsen who finished well through Dean Henderson’s legs.
Wolves then took the lead through Joao Gomes – and Cunha again played a big part in the goal.
He found substitute Goncalo Guedes on the right side with a lovely through ball. The Portuguese cut back for Gomes to finish into the bottom corner.
It was just a really productive performance from Cunha, who had 60 touches and made three big chances in the game (via Sofascore).
So, another big performance from Cunha, who sent a defiant message to supporters after the game.
He wrote on Instagram: “Don’t stop believing, it will be done until it runs out.”
Goalscorer Gomes was among those to comment, writing ‘Monster’.
Keeping Cunha fit will be vital for Wolves
So Wolves are still winless in the Premier League and many are disappointed the team were not able to beat Crystal Palace.
But at least Cunha is somewhere close to his best, and Strand Larsen is also among the goals.
Cunha is arguably Wolves’ best player these days and keeping him fit this season will be so important.
We saw earlier this week how Cunha had ice packs on both knees at training, which was a lightly concerning sight.
Wolves fans would hate to think of Cunha as being fragile, because the team is so much stronger with him in it.
He is the kind of player who can turn games around in the blink of an eye. He is capable of moments of magic, and someone who will never stop working for the team. So him being unavailable at any point this season would be a hammer blow.
