All is not rosy in the Harry Potter universe and for its fans, and bad news has just fallen regarding the spin-off. This is a big disappointment for some.
Since the release of the first film Fantastic Beastsfans of JK Rowling's magical universe had reason to rejoice. This spin-off of the saga Harry Potter brought new life by introducing magizoologist Newt Scamander and providing richer historical context. But after two more lukewarmly received sequels, everything is not all rosy for the future.
A sequel for this Harry Potter spin-off?
After the initial success, the next two films – The Crimes of Grindelwald et Dumbledore's Secrets – failed to captivate as many people. Despite efforts to flesh out Rowling's universe and the addition of iconic characters like Grindelwald and Dumbledore, reviews have been more mixed. The fans, too, seemed divided. Result: the box office showed a clear drop in interest, a telling sign in the cinematic world.
For those who were still hoping for a miracle, lead actor Eddie Redmayne has just delivered a coup de grace. In a recent interview for ComicBookwhile promoting his new series Day of the Jackalhe frankly admitted that the chances of seeing Newt Scamander again in the cinema are now very low: “I think they probably saw Newt's last appearance on screen.” Of course, it leaves the door open for Warner Bros. and JK Rowling to officially decide. But the message is clear.
A series to fill the gap
Without the Fantastic Beasts sequel, Warner Bros. opted for another strategy: relaunching Harry Potter itself, but this time in the form of a TV series. A bold choice that will recast all the original characters. The studio hopes to revive fans' interest with this rereading of the already well-known adventures of Harry, Hermione and Ron. Some fans are impatient.
If Newt Scamander's future on the big screen is compromised, this does not mark the end of Rowling's universe. Between the TV series in the works and the attractions in Universal parks, the wizarding world continues to attract attention. As for Eddie Redmayne, fans will be able to find him in a completely different role in Day of the Jackalstarting November 14 on Peacock.
