Here, no superheroes, spacewalks or anything else, but a real, historical fact, Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of Allied troops from Dunkirk in May 1940. An operation like no other, carried on screen by Fionn Whitehead, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Barry Keoghan, Aneurin Barnard, Kenneth Branagh and even pop star Harry Styles. A casting in a particularly realistic line… Unless!
Dunkirk : World War II from a new perspective
As its name suggests, the film takes us to the north of France, to Dunkirk. The city, in May 1940, was the scene of an unusual operation, that of the evacuation of the Allies, trapped by the German army. We follow young soldiers, including Tommy, trying to escape via the beach and the sea, passing through the fire of the Nazi air force. Faced with this, the English will gradually organize themselves, thanks to raids by the Royal Air Force and Farrier, a pilot by trade. Finally, note that a certain Mr. Dawson will also be ready to participate in the war effort with his fishing boat.
Dunkirk : when Christopher Nolan comes to terms with reality
If Christopher Nolan chose to show Operation Dynamo in its rawest reality, the director ofOppenheimer nevertheless chose to do things his own way. Indeed, in Dunkirkwe come across Allied soldiers frozen in the cold on a pier. Waiting for reinforcements to arrive, it is under a gray and particularly low sky that they believe in their tiny hope of getting out. In addition, the North Sea appears to be terribly stormy, which adds to the worrying atmosphere of the picture… Note that in reality, Operation Dynamo took place in perfect weather conditions, under the sun . A contrast that would undoubtedly have been difficult to bring to the screen, between the bombings and the deaths. It is also thanks to this mild weather that what we call “The Miracle of Dunkirk” took place, with the repatriation of 200,000 English soldiers.
