The Republic of Estonia confirmed that the Moroccan autonomy initiative is a “serious and credible basis” for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara.

Estonia considered that the autonomy plan, presented by Morocco in April 2007 to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, constitutes a serious and credible basis for a final solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue, according to the joint statement issued following the meeting that brought together, on Monday in Rabat, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and African Cooperation. Moroccans residing abroad, Nasser Bourita, and his Estonian counterpart, Margus Tsahkna.

In this regard, the Estonian Foreign Minister renewed his country’s support for the United Nations-led process for “a just, practical, lasting and acceptable political solution to all parties” to the Moroccan Sahara issue.

“Morocco and Estonia agree on the exclusive role of the United Nations in the political process and affirm their support for Resolution No. 2703 issued by the UN Security Council, which referred to the role and responsibility of the parties in searching for a realistic, practical and lasting political solution based on consensus,” the joint statement stated.

Likewise, the two countries stressed the importance of the basic principles of the United Nations Charter, including respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.

This new position of Estonia comes in a context similar to the positions of the majority of European countries, and falls within the framework of the international dynamic to support the Moroccan initiative for autonomy and Morocco’s sovereignty over its desert.
