In the opinion of “Die Welt”, the current taboo regarding the fight against illegal migration was broken at the European Union summit.

“On the issue of deportation the direction of the wind in political Brussels has changed” – we read in the daily. This is evidenced – as emphasized – by the final declaration of 27 EU governments, which called for the adoption of laws enabling faster deportations and finding new ways to prevent illegal immigration.

According to “Die Welt” Poland received strong support on Thursday. “Almost all EU countries – from Finland to the Netherlands and Spain – showed understanding for Poland’s actions,” the daily noted.

As he emphasized, a few sentences were added to the final declaration of the summit stating that Russia, Belarus and other countries should not abuse European valuesand that “exceptional situations require appropriate measures.”

“Die Welt” assessed it as diplomatic language at its best, thanks to which “a strong signal of solidarity with Poland was sent.”

The “Sueddeutsche Zeitung” daily drew attention to the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the EU summit. According to the newspaper Zelensky was just an observer in Brussels.

“Although the president of Ukraine was allowed to present his ‘victory plan’there was no serious discussion on this topic,” it was noted.

European Union Summit. Talks about migration and war in Ukraine

“Because politics works the way it does, the main topic of the EU summit was how to deal with illegal migrants. Zelensky received little more from his colleagues than words of encouragement, a pat on the back and a group photo, said Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

If Zelensky was talked to about his plan honestly and openly, some fundamental differences of opinion would quickly come to light, e.g. regarding the issue of immediate and Ukraine’s unconditional accession to NATO – emphasized.

“In this respect, the visit to Brussels was probably a sobering event for Zelensky. From a rhetorical point of view, he is praised by Europeans as a defender of democracy and freedom against the aggressor from Russia.

On Thursday, however, he was treated more like a slightly irritating observer” – summed up “Sueddeutsche Zeitung”.
