Christos Doulkeridis ends his active political career after losing his mayoral sash in Ixelles. Ecolo nevertheless came first in the poll on Sunday but an alliance between the MR, the Engagés and the PS got the better of the mayoralty of the Greens, won in 2018.

The outgoing mayor of Ixelles, Christos Doulkeridis, has no regrets about not having given in tos “politician games”he explained Monday the day after municipal elections which will result in his ouster from the mayorate of the municipality. “I am very calm”he told RTL info. “I think that everyone should be able to actually look in the mirror and say to themselves, ‘Have I been consistent with my values, with what I wanted to defend?’ and I did it during my mandate, I did it during the election campaign and I did it afterwards.“, he continues before adding. “Obviously I am disappointed not to be able to continue doing the work that we started together with a partner.”

Ecolo nevertheless came first in the poll on Sunday – “an incredible result”underlines the mayor – but an alliance between the MR, the Engagés and the PS got the better of the mayoralty of the Greens, won in 2018.

The losing mayor talks about a particularly complicated electoral campaign. “We suffered attacks, incredible bashing during this campaign, as if Ecolo was the problem and, yet, the people of Ixelles made us the first party in the municipality. And then, there was another part of politics, that of little political games that disgust the population. I have always played politics with authenticity, around values ​​and a project that I have always defended, I never wanted to give in to politics. struggle for places I remain with my dignity and I am proud of the record at the head of the municipality.declared Christos Doulkeridis interviewed on the sidelines of a meeting of his party office.

Ecolo formed a majority with the socialists in Ixelles. “The PS has chosen today to give more space to conservative parties in a society that is becoming more right-wing, it’s a strange game”notes the outgoing mayor. A betrayal for Christos Doulkeridis? “I don’t know how the PS is going to justify that,” replies the councilor. “But I won’t be made to believe that choosing to make an alliance with Ecolo or an alliance with the MR and Les Engagés is the same thing. Afterwards, he accepts his choice…” The mayor of Ixelles, however, assures “not to have lost one’s dignity”.

Ecolo figure in Brussels for many years, regional secretary of state from 2009 to 2014, Mr. Doulkeridis announced the end of his active political career. But why do it? “I have no plan B”he indicates. “I don’t have any exit pay, I don’t have a golden parachute, like others can have. We’ll see.” No regrets, however, he announces. “I am comfortable with this choice, because I think that it is no longer exactly the politics as I liked to do it for quite a few years, and that perhaps we really need to move on the relay to others who believe in it, and who are present, and who can take over.”
