A comet should be visible to the naked eye in from Saturday October 12.

Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas should be observed with the naked eye throughout France, starting this Saturday, October 12. It will be visible, just after sunset, for at least a week, thanks to its exceptional brightness.

“There are regularly bright comets that are a little visible to the naked eye, but this brightness is rare,” Lucie Maquet, astronomer at the -PSL Observatory, tells our colleagues at BFMTV.

The comet began its journey millions of years ago

This “comet of the decade”, or even the “comet of the century”, will shine at its maximum this Saturday, October 12, when it passes closest to the Earth, i.e. 71 million kilometers away.

Its brightness could even make it possible to admire it from a city. Comet Tsuchinshan-Atlas began its journey millions of years ago, but was only detected in January 2023 by a Chinese observatory.
