A vast embezzlement involving the socialist youth movement Red Falcons and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (FWB) is causing a stir in Belgium. The Liège public prosecutor’s office suspects the misappropriation of several million euros in public subsidies, accumulated since 2009 thanks to falsified documents allowing abusive financing to be obtained.
Four people, including three members of the Red Falcons and an FWB agent, were taken into police custody. The agent, responsible for controlling the subsidies, allegedly falsified administrative reports to allow the payment of funds, despite criteria not met by the association. Last June, another leader of the Red Falcons was already accused of having embezzled €150,000 for personal expenses, highlighting flaws in the financial management of the organization.
The Minister-President of the FWB, Élisabeth Degryse, confirmed the institution’s full cooperation with the judicial authorities. While Benjamin Van Hulle, president of the PS in Huy, claimed to have no direct link with the Red Falcons, adding to be shocked by these revelations, which raise questions about the transparency of the use of public subsidies in this context.
