Since the publication, on October 31, 2008, of the “White Paper”, the founding text of bitcoin written under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, various hypotheses have been put forward as to the identity of the creator of the most important cryptocurrency. Is it an individual or a collective of several people? The mystery remains. Until today?
The latest documentary from the pay channel HBO, “Money Electric: The Bitcoin Mystery”, by director Cullen Hoback, broadcast overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday, believes to have identified the mysterious inventor who has not left any traces since 2011. This is not Craig Wright, a 53-year-old computer scientist and entrepreneur who claimed authorship of the cyber currency, but was recently rejected by the British High Court of Justice. It is also not, among others, the former physicist of Japanese origin found by the magazine “Newsweek” in 2014. The documentary suggests that it is rather Peter Todd, a pioneering Canadian developer of bitcoin that the director interviewed in a former World War II bunker in Latvia. He immediately denied it. “If I were Satoshi, I would have destroyed all evidence to support this, so that I would never be tempted to reveal it,” he said. Then, to the question “But you are not Satoshi?”, he responds in a sarcastic tone: “Oh yes, I Satoshi. We are all Satoshi.”
On social networks, the person reiterated that he was not the famous creator of bitcoin. “I’m not Satoshi,” he denied on the X network. “That’s exactly what Satoshi would say,” commented one Internet user. Members of the crypto community, however, remain skeptical, because despite the investigation’s attempts to provide solid arguments, doubt still lingers.
Peter Todd also criticized the director’s approach, which did not present it as an attempt to identify Satoshi Nakamoto. “It was only during the very last interview that I understood what he was doing,” he said.
