Shipwreck on Lake Kivu: ASRAMES gives the executive body bags intended for the dignified burial of the victims

Following the tragedy of the sinking of the MV Merdi which occurred on Thursday October 3 off the coast of Kituku, the Regional Association for the Supply of Essential Medicines (ASRAMES), presented this Saturday October 5 to the provincial government of North Kivu a batch of bags mortuaries intended to ensure a dignified and respectful burial of the victims.

There are 100 body bags for adults and 100 for children. For Joseph Waso Misona, president of the board of directors of ASRAMES, these body bags will not only respect the memory of the victims, but also protect public health by preventing the spread of diseases.

“Now what is very urgent is the burial. Because the burial won’t wait. As soon as all the authorities are notified, I believe they will order these burials. So, we felt that we must first deal with the dignified and respectable burial of our brothers and sisters who lost their lives,” Joseph Waso Misona explained.

Divisional Commissioner Romy Ekuka Lipopo, vice-governor of North Kivu, welcomes this gesture from this partner:

“We are trying to resolve all the crises, but we can only do this thanks to partners. The national government, through the Minister of Social Affairs who is already within our walls, is doing what is necessary but we would like our partners at the local level here to also be able to help the provincial government.”

Many families are still waiting for news of their loved ones who died in this tragic shipwreck.

MONUSCO aviation was involved in the search for survivors of this shipwreck.

At least 3 bodies were recovered thanks to the support provided to search boats by a MONUSCO helicopter.
