In a message on his Instagram account, Kylian Mbappé paid tribute to Antoine Griezmann following the announcement of the international retirement of the vice-captain of the France team.
Kylian Mbappé praised Antoine Griezmann, “an exceptional player”, after announcing his international retirement. This Monday, to everyone’s surprise, the vice-captain of the Blues indicated that he was putting an end to his adventure with the French team. Since then, tributes have multiplied for the 2018 world champion.
Appointed captain of the France team in March 2023, in the wake of the 2022 World Cup and the international retirement of Hugo Lloris, Kylian Mbappé posted a message on Instagram in honor of Antoine Griezmann: “A exceptional player who ends his career with the French team, one of the most important players of the modern era in our selection,” wrote the Real Madrid striker.

“Wearing this jersey always demands more without sometimes bringing the recognition that goes with it”
“Thank you for the unforgettable memories you gave us, you supported this team for years and greatly contributed to bringing it to the top with numerous titles,” added Kylian Mbappé. Together, the two men won the World Cup in 2018 and the Nations League in 2021. For his part, Antoine Griezmann also experienced a first final during Euro 2016, where he wore the Blues. In another register, “Grizou” also shone during the 2022 World Cup, with this defeat in the final.
Aged 33, Antoine Griezmann was getting closer to Lloris’s caps record (145) but will therefore stop at 137 caps, for 44 goals. “Some may think that it is too early to stop straight away but I understand and respect your decision,” Mbappé commented again. “Wearing this jersey always demands more without sometimes bringing the recognition that goes with it. You will forever remain in the history of the France team.”
“And I will never forget the honor and the pleasure it was to play alongside you for so many years,” concluded Kylian Mbappé, punctuating his message with a heart. “I never trivialized it. Good luck my friend and thank you.” The two players, who both play in La Liga, will be able to continue to cross paths in the coming months. Under contract with Atlético de Madrid until 2026, Griezmann has however never hidden his desire to leave for MLS, which could be the last stage of his career.
