10 books where we talk about ghosts — Revue Les libraires

An emblematic figure of fear, the ghost is this irreconcilable union of present and absence which can only find form in our imagination. As the day slowly fades, giving way to night and the border between the world of the living and that of the dead is thinning, it is time to meet this immaterial entity which has haunted the pages of literature since time immemorial.

1. Haunt Villeray, Gabrielle Caron (Stanké)

“Come to think of it, I’ll say “ghost”. I always thought it was a beautiful word. A gentle word. Pleasant to pronounce. We can stretch each syllable. With the O circumflex accent, it’s pretty. Ghost. Yes, definitely, I identify with one ghost. “Revenant” sounds too scary. It sounds vengeful. “I’m coming back for revenge!” I am not vengeful. It’s never been my style. I don’t take revenge. I prefer to take it all in, forget nothing, and bring something out in a squabble three years later. I’m a Gemini, after all. “Spirit” sounds mischievous, sneaky. A spirit causes trouble, it bothers the living, it’s even violent. Like in Poltergeist, one of the films that traumatized me the most. I don’t feel like being mean. A ghostit’s nicer. It’s Halloween, party, comic book. This is Devon Sawa in Casper. That’s my vibe. »

2. College of Mysteries (volume 1): The locker orphansEdith Girard (Quebec America)

“The two hands of ghost moved again with a bony crackle. This time, they leaned against each other, as a sign of prayer. She begged him. — But what do you want from me?! THE ghost wiggled, groaning, and propelled himself forward. He put a hand over Willem’s mouth to silence him. Surprised, he froze in fear. The hand of ghost on his mouth gave off heat. As he no longer spoke, the ghost withdrew his hand. — Okay, I’m with you! Immediately, the ghost grabbed his buckets of black water and flew away. – Hey! At least wait for me! He jogged to catch up with the girl. He was amazed. A ghost actually communicated with him! He had a thought for Mr. Chevalier. “It’s lucky that the ghosts aren’t supposed to have come back,” he said to himself wryly. »

“Nothing and no one warned me! The collision was more than brutal. Wake up dead! Without notice or explanatory note! Dead! Figure it out on your own! I didn’t expect to see God appear, I’m not naive, but I would still have liked someone to accompany me a little. The least that could have been done was for me to be assigned a spiritual guide or a tutor to cover the essential rudiments of ghosts. I’m not a demanding person. Normally, I can easily manage on my own. There are few situations in which I have felt helpless. That said, the administrative services of heaven failed in the most basic standards of citizenship by providing me with nothing and no one so that I could learn the basics of the afterlife. »

“Is that a cat? ghost? — No, there are no animals ghostsbut they are very sensitive to our presence, especially the cats, explained Sacha. I don’t really know why, anyway. Pedro let out a long sigh. — I admit that I am a little disappointed not to have had to put a ghost recalcitrant, he said. It’s very pretty, a cat, but it’s not really exciting… – Don’t worry, Pedro, Tasie reassured him. I promise you won’t be bored with us. We’re going to visit lots of places and take you on incredible adventures, even if it means instigating them ourselves when it gets too boring…”

“You want to call?” Alexis suggested. Pierre-Luc’s smile faded to give way to a worried expression. Clara looked both stunned and fascinated. —Are you serious? Pierre-Luc was surprised. – Yes. He handed her a piece of paper with ten numbers scribbled on it. — I’m sure that’s not the real number, said his cousin. —Then call! Alexis challenged him. Pierre-Luc looked at the number for a moment, then took his cell phone out of his pocket with an uncertain gesture. – Wait! Clara intervened. We are talking about calling ghost of a killer who, according to Alexis, tracks down those who call him to eliminate them. That suits me. But I wanted you to be aware of it before we continue… – Um, I…, said Pierre-Luc. Alexis savored the moment. His cousin felt fear in his face. – THE ghosts don’t exist, the latter murmured without conviction. »

“When I talk to him, the old man ghost often laughs at me. That’s not a bad role, basically. He plays down my little mishaps and plays the interlocutor when I feel like I need to chat with someone other than Vicky. It’s always been like this: I can never feel alone with an invented father around. At the end of the day, I often bring a wooden chair with a sinew seat to the La-Z-Boy. Sitting near the ghost who constantly rocks himself by kicking his heels on the floor, I talk to him about what I discovered earlier, about what I feel – we call it the little advice after dark. »

” THE ghosts are not very reactive. They are not trying to arouse fear. Their intentions stop at the search for comfort or tranquility. They will send a few signs to announce their presence if they feel considered, but if they are ignored, they will remain silent, and you will never hear from them. You could live with a ghost without knowing it; sharing space with living things is favorable, because neither can trample each other’s feet. With demons, it’s more complicated. THE ghosts as the demons observe you with a certain fascination. But only demons feed on your heat. They claim powers that border on omniscience. They move easily and know how to move objects. Most often, they become attached to people they won’t leave alone. They will enter your mind and disturb your sleep. They will get you tangled in your own knots. They are described as disturbed creatures, seeking to avenge their deaths. The dark ideas that plague human beings are the basis of their obsession. »

“We tell the story of the death of a friend as if nothing had happened, with a strange lightness, because it is easier to talk about our deaths through a story of ghosts than to approach the subject head-on. I am also convinced that asking here and there to tell me about his bereavements point blank would have achieved nothing. We don’t talk about this to strangers. Sharing this kind of experience requires that we feel confident, in an intimate relationship with the other. But this is what the stories of ghosts : go through detours which, rather than losing us, bring us back to ourselves. Ghosts. Premonitory dreams. Visits to the clairvoyant. Experiences of possession and dispossession. Objects that move on their own. Unexplained caresses and gusts of wind. Weird coincidences. »

“He takes three steps forward. Never has his look been so expressive, so desperate. God in Heaven, this is exactly what Victor wanted to avoid: being confronted with ghost of the one he killed. The night that crept into him earlier thickens like tar. — It was you who killed me. I don’t know how, but it’s you. — Guillaume, I’m sorry, but I had to… I had to… — And you know what’s going to happen to me, live… He leans down to the psychologist’s level and he can now clearly see his face. What he thought was a resurgence of his acne is actually a series of red and black patches that appear and grow visibly. — … what will happen to me for eternity… At these words, his lips split, while the skin swells and softens. “You spoke to me about it yourself earlier,” continues the voice, now trembling with suffering. The hair comes loose and falls, then the face bursts in several places, just like the rest of the body, to release red and yellowish humors accompanied by a smell that causes Victor to gag. »

“Something is squeaking. I leave the door to press my face against the bull’s-eye. I can see the lit bulbs and the outlines of the furniture. A livid face suddenly appears before my eyes. I jumped back, scared. The face contemplates me for a moment and fades. The word “ghost” echoes in my head. My heart is racing! (Even no need to go to the Parc de la Terror, I’ve already had my fill!) I shake myself: don’t panic, it must be Stécie. It looked like it, but I didn’t have time to get a good look. I cautiously return to the bull’s eye. I have the impression that a white silhouette is sliding towards the fresco. Weird! Stécie would never have gone near…”
