Dragon Age The Veilguard: the Xbox and PS5 versions compared by Digital Foundry | Xbox

After years of waiting, BioWare is now making its comeback with the release of Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Despite a graphic style moving away from photorealism, the title seems visually impressive and notably uses new rendering techniques from the Frostbite engine. Digital Foundry took a look at the Xbox Series X|S and PS5 versions of the game, and here's what you need to know.

Two graphics modes on Xbox and PS5

As is often the case, Dragon Age: The Veilguard offers two different graphics modes, in order to prioritize image quality or performance.

In his fashion qualitythe game runs at an internal resolution of 1080p, then reconstructed in 4K thanks to FSR, all at 30 FPS. Experts explain that the game uses a customized version of FSR 2.2, and that while harmful effects remain, particularly during rapid movements, the result on the screen is rather clean and of better quality than other titles using FSR. .

The mode performance aims for 60 FPS, with a dynamic resolution of 720p, reconstructed to 1440p thanks to FSR. Visually speaking, the difference between the two modes concerns ray tracing, and in particular ambient occlusion and reflections via Ray Tracing, reserved for the mode quality. Differences in light as well as shadows are generally observed.

Digital Foundry specifies that the Xbox Series

Two modes on Xbox Series S, but no Ray Tracing

As for the Xbox Series S, the two graphics modes are also present, with a resolution of 648p for the mode qualityreconstructed in 1440p via FSR. Obviously, the result on the screen is less detailed and the noise is more present, while Ray Tracing is completely absent on Xbox Series S.

The mode performance aims for 1080p, with an internal resolution of 432p. If FSR here also makes it possible to improve image quality, Digital Foundry specifies that the result is less qualitative on 4K screens, and that the imperfections linked to FSR are also more marked.

Compared to the Xbox Series X and PS5 versions, the Xbox Series S offers generally the same graphics settings as the mode performance of the Xbox Series X, through its two modes.

A satisfactory framerate on all consoles

Whether on Xbox Series X or PS5, the framerate is good with a stable 30 FPS in the mode quality on both machines. The same goes for the mode performance which offers an overall solid 60 FPS on both media, with only drops of a few frames on rare occasions.

The Xbox Series S also offers a stable 30 FPS in its quality mode, which is good news for Microsoft's small console. On the other hand, the performance mode is less convincing, with frequent fluctuations when moving and during cutscenes.

Digital Foundry still specifies that the game runs at a fairly decent level of performance most of the time, but that it is just not quite up to the standards of other platforms.

Below is the full analysis from Digital Foundry. Generally speaking, experts believe that the game offers a good experience on Xbox Series X and PS5, especially in its mode performancewith low-impact graphics compromises, but a framerate of 60 FPS.
