Chairlift accident in the Pyrenees: nine serious injuries, thirty other minor injuries, the ski resort closed

A chairlift accident that occurred on Saturday at the Astún ski resort, in the Pyrenees, left nine seriously injured and around thirty lightly injured. The station was closed and several helicopters and ambulances were deployed to evacuate the victims.

Broken mechanism cable?

According to local media, at least nine people were very seriously injured in this accident which occurred in this station located in Aragon. Around thirty others were less seriously injured.

A young man, who witnessed the incident, told public television TVE that he had seen a cable from the chairlift mechanism jump. “Suddenly the chairlifts started bouncing and people were flying,” he said.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his support for the injured and their families on the social network Azcón to offer him all the support of the government All our affection for the injured and their families.

Five helicopters and around ten ambulances were mobilized to evacuate the injured to nearby hospitals, according to media reports. The ski resort was closed.
