In this semi-final of the WTA tournament in Hobart, we find the young 18-year-old Australian local Maya Joint and the Belgian Elise Mertens. The Wild Card, Maya Joint, created a surprise in this tournament. Indeed, the young Australian won 3 consecutive victories in just 2 sets, starting with world number 53 Olga Danilovic. She was then surprising during the round of 16 by quickly eliminating the number 4 seed Magda Linette with a score of 6-1, 6-1 in just 1 hour of play. But the Australian did not stopped there since she reproduced a similar victory against Sofia Kenin in 64 minutes, during the quarter-finals.
Elise Mertens, for her part, is the number 2 seed in the tournament. She started her season here in Hobart by winning her first match in just 76 minutes against qualifier Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (104th in the world). She then beat world No. 76 Renata Zarazua 6-4, 6-3 before eliminating world No. 77 Veronika Kudermetova in a 3-set match. The finalist of last year’s tournament should be keen to get her revenge this season by reaching the final again in order to conclude the tournament with a victory. However, she would have to face an opponent who has nothing to lose.
