Facing the German, Monfils had a very accomplished first round, serious about taking advantage of his opponent's errors in serving (only 28% firsts for Struff in this first act!) and eternal showman to get the audience behind him. Half volley, volley, lob then short cross pass to finish: the Frenchman particularly enjoyed this sequence, in a game which would give him the second break of this set.
