ATP, France > Gasquet, soon to retire: “Tennis is not just about big matches. It’s visceral. It’s something other than winning or losing. It’s surpassing yourself, annoying an opponent”

If the announcement of his future retirement (scheduled for Roland‐Garros in 2025) was a little overshadowed by that of Rafael Nadal, Richard Gasquet gave a great interview to our colleagues at The Team in which he particularly talks about his passion and love for the game.

“It’s not the same, yes. But it’s the passion for tennis. I have always been motivated. There is a love of the game, really. Playing the big matches, which we obviously prefer to play, and the small ones. That of hitting the ball. Tennis is not just about big matches. It’s visceral. It’s another thing to win or lose. It’s surpassing yourself, annoying an opponent. When I won the Cassis Challenger (a few weeks ago), I became the one among the three youngest, and the three oldest, to have won in Challenger. That sums it up for me. And I experienced a beautiful moment, with my father Francis by my side, as if history was repeating itself. It made me happy to come back to a club. That’s the essence of tennis. It’s important to me. I like it. I feel respect from the people who come to watch the matches. And a lot of love. »
