If you have a Microsoft account, you must absolutely know this change

If you have a Microsoft account (which is very likely if you use Windows), you will have to get used to disconnecting your account after using it on a PC that is not yours. On a help page, relayed by our colleagues from The Verge, the Redmond firm indeed indicates this important change: “The web browser connection experience changes when you connect to a product or service using your Microsoft account. From February 2025, you will remain automatically connected, unless you disconnect or use private navigation. ”

The easiest way is to use private navigation, which automatically disconnects you when you close the window. Otherwise, if you do not use private navigation, you will have to make sure that your Microsoft account has been disconnected before leaving. The firm warns that, if you forget to disconnect your Microsoft account on a third party's computer, another person may have access to extremely sensitive information, such as the content of your emails on Outlook.com, your OneDrive files , or your research and navigation history.

Why this change?

Microsoft does not indicate why it applies this change. But our colleagues from Techradar think that the idea is to make Microsoft products, such as Outlook or OneDrive, more practical for people who regularly use the versions for browser of these products.

Moreover, it should be noted that many online services that are used daily do not automatically disconnect their users after each session. However, it is always important to know that now the Microsoft account will work like these services.

  • Microsoft indicates that from February, your account will remain connected to the devices you use, unless you use private navigation or if you manually disconnect yourself
  • If you use your Microsoft account on a device that is not yours, and you do not disconnect yourself, someone else may have access to sensitive information, such as your emails or files on The Cloud
  • Microsoft may have decided to apply this change to make its online services more practical on web browsers
