Since Reuters first reported last September, we’ve known that PlayStation is active around the PS6 and that a new partnership with AMD is envisaged, in particular to offer full backwards compatibility of its next console. A few weeks ago, it was Hideaki Nishino, the CEO of PlayStation who spoke about the future of the brand, confirming that the next machine would arrive on time, with a launch that will neither be rushed nor delayed to leave room to the PS5 Pro.
Today, it is through an insider that we learn that the PS6 would be planned for 2027 with the new AMD UDNA chipsthe replacements for RDNA architectures, which would be synonymous with a real technical gap.
7-year life cycle for the PS5? The PS6 in 2027?
It was (as very often) via the NeoGaf forums that we were able to glimpse a conversation between several members of the community and the insider KeplerL2, already renowned in the industry for having revealed a lot of information in advance, notably the technical specifications of the PS5 Pro.
KeplerL2 thus confirms that the PS6 is to date “entirely designed and in pre-silicon validation phase”which means that the development of the machine is in the final stages. The engineers thus realize the latest tests in order to validate the theoretical performances of a chip to give the green light and launch the physical manufacturing of the first prototype of the PS6.
The insider specifies that in general, two years pass between the manufacturing of the first prototype and the final release of the console. The PS6 would be like this planned for the end of 2027if all of Sony’s plans continue to go smoothly. A logical date, allowing us to have a PS5 with a life cycle of 7 years, like this is still the case, on average chez PlayStation :
- PS11994-2000 (6 years lifespan)
- PS22000-2006 (6 years lifespan)
- PS32006-2013 (7 years lifespan)
- PS42013-2020 (7 years lifespan)
- PS52020-2027 ?
In addition, Sony confirmed in February 2024 during its quarterly report that the PS5 was now in its second and final life cycle. This therefore coincides with an end of life planned for 2027.
-KeplerL2 does not stop there since it offers us other details. We have known since September 2024, Sony and AMD will extend their partnership on PS6, making it possible in particular to offer full backwards compatibility by machine. The insider goes a little further by indicating that the PS6 GPU would be a “gfx13 variant”. This processor is formerly known under the name RDNA 5. It is now called UDNA, and it is the latter which will equip the next PS6 consoles. Alas, KeplerL2 does not yet know the processor size.
Still on the power part, but in terms of rumors that must be taken with a grain of salt, a Tech specialist declared on the forum of the Chinese site chiphell.com that the PS6 would be equipped with AMD’s 3D V-Cache technologyallowing increase tenfold considerably the performance of the machine. But on this point, we still remain cautious and avoid getting carried away, the source being less reliable than the information generally shared by KeplerL2.
Concerning the opposing party, many rumors suggest that Microsoft could draw the first one and that the new generation of Xbox, known under the code name « Xbox Prime » could arrive as early as next year, for the 2026 end-of-year holidays.
