Electronic Arts announced the permanent closure of its Origin platform on April 17, 2025, marking the end of an era that lasted 14 years in the history of PC video games. This decision follows Microsoft’s discontinuation of support for 32-bit applications.
That’s it, Electronic Arts will soon part ways with its legendary PC launcher. Launched in 2011, Origin sparked considerable controversynotably when EA removed certain major games like Crysis 2 from Steam to make them exclusive to its platform. This strategy, although logical from a commercial point of view to avoid commissions from Valve, had never really convinced players, attached to the Steam ecosystem.
This closure of Origin is part of a broader EA strategy to modernize its digital services. The publisher, which owns major franchises like EA Sports FC, The Sims and Mass Effect, continues toadapt its digital distribution to market developments and player expectations.

To ensure the transition, Origin users will have to migrate to the EA app, available since 2022. The process is intended to be simple: once the application is downloaded, you just need to log in with your Origin credentials to find your game library. Saves stored in the cloud will be transferred automatically, but Data from games not supporting this feature will require manual migration.
-Important technical point: as the EA app is a 64-bit application, users who still have a 32-bit operating system will need to update their configuration. This obviously echoes Microsoft’s decision to stop support for Windows 10 32-bit next October.
For players reluctant to use the EA app, an alternative exists: Most EA games are now available on Steam, including recent releases like Dragon Age The Veilguard. It is also possible to link your Origin account to Steam to access your existing library.
