Good news if you watch Disney+ on a Samsung

This is a small announcement that went generally unnoticed during CES 2025. HDR10+ Technologies, which oversees the standard of the same name, announced that the giant Disney+ would – finally – adopt the standard. Excellent news for owners of Samsung televisions, therefore, who are ignoring Dolby Vision in favor of HDR 10+.

An image more vibrant than ever

It was starting to take its toll. Since its launch in 2019, Disney+ has always supported HDR, but only in its HDR 10 or Dolby Vision version. HDR 10+, supposed to be a competitor to the latter standard, was not included, even though Apple +, Prime Video and others support it.

This therefore forces televisions normally calibrated for HDR 10+ to use the “basic” version of the technology, using static metadata. Simply put: a viewing experience that doesn’t do justice to high-end TVs, especially from Samsung.

Soon a bad memory, therefore, since the group working on the development of HDR 10+ announced that content from the Disney+ catalog would very soon be broadcast in HDR 10+. The streaming platform will automatically adapt the video stream to match the best version of the technology for your TV, without you needing to intervene.

Why doesn’t Samsung like Dolby Vision?

Samsung is not very friendly with Dolby, and there are several reasons for this. The first is that the South Korean brand has actively worked on the development of the HDR 10+ standard, a competitor to Dolby Vision. It is therefore natural that it seeks to favor a technology to which it has contributed.

The second reason is economic. Offering Dolby Vision on your television means paying a license to Dolby. HDR 10+ is, on the contrary, a free, open and free license. This is also the reason why most televisions that offer Dolby Vision also offer HDR 10+ decoding, this does not cost their manufacturer more.

However, in recent weeks, Samsung seems to be considering the idea of future Dolby Vision compatibility on its televisions. At the end of December, the brand signed a partnership with Dolby for the integration of the technology on its OLED screens… dedicated to connected vehicles. You have to start somewhere, right?
