In 2012, United Front Games was going out Sleeping Dogs, a very good one GTA-like which took us on an intense adventure in the heart of the Chosen de Hong Kong. An excellent open-world action video game that has attracted quite a few players, but not enough for its publisher Square Enix. The license is still strong and a film adaptation live action with Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, John Wick: Chapter 4) was announced in 2017. The Chinese actor made reassuring remarks the following year, but since then, it has been dead calm.
SO, where is this Sleeping Dog film project? Well Donnie Yen spoke this week with Polygon and the question of this adaptation into a live action feature film has obviously come back to the table. Unfortunately, the news is not good at all :
I spent a lot of time and work with these producers, and even invested some of my own money to get the drafts and some rights. I waited years. Years. And I really want to do it. I have all these visions in my head, and unfortunately… I don’t know, you know how it works in Hollywood, right? I spent many, many years on it. It was an unfortunate thing.
Okay, let’s move on to better things.

The movie Sleeping Dogs is no longer relevant, production is no longer moving forward and the adaptation will probably never see the light of day, Donnie Yen has moved on to something else. This is obviously a disappointment, but not really a surprise, the project never really took off. Despite some rumors regarding the involvement of Timo Tjahjanto (The ABCs of Death, V/H/S, The Night Comes for Us), no director had been officially attached to the film.
Sleeping Dogs will therefore simply remain a video game, which is worth the detour, even 13 years later. You can buy it in Definitive Edition from €2.99 on Amazon, Cdiscount, Fnac, GOG.com et Gamesplanet.
