A new labeling system for docking stations and cables should reduce confusion for consumers.
The USB Implementor Forum (USB-IF) has introduced a new labeling system. This should help consumers choose the right USB technology more quickly and easily, especially for docking stations and USB 4 cables.
Data speed and power
Instead of obscure designations like “USB 3.2 Gen 2” or marketing terms like “SuperSpeed USB 10Gbps,” users will now see logos with recognizable speeds, like “USB 40Gbps” or “USB 80Gbps.” So the speed of the USB port is immediately clear, which was often not the case before.
-In addition to docking stations, the new logos also apply to USB cables. This lets consumers know not only what data speeds are supported, but also how much power the cable can handle. This makes it easier and more transparent to choose the right accessories for laptops and other devices.
The clearer labels are a welcome change, especially since Europe recently passed legislation on mandatory USB-C chargers. If all devices are going to use USB-C, consumers need to be clear about the best cables to purchase.
