In this new episode of “Symptoms”, Doctor Ygal Boujnah, ophthalmologist in Lyon, shares the story of a 25-year-old patient, faced with unexplained loss of vision. In three years, the young man consulted several specialists, without obtaining a satisfactory answer to his persistent visual problems.
Google’s algorithm puts Dr. Boujnah in the patient’s path. Despite standard examinations such as measuring visual acuity, eye pressure or even retinal scans, no abnormality was detected. The patient is therefore referred to a neuro-ophthalmologist to explore possible neurological causes of his visual disturbances.
“In general, a young patient who has poor vision and in whom we do not find much, we will do a brain MRI with specific sequences to look for diseases of the optic nerve (…) or at the level of the brain, such as multiple sclerosis for example”, explains Dr Boujnah. However, this in-depth assessment did not identify any anomalies.
Nevertheless, the neuro-ophthalmologist was crucial in directing Dr. Boujnah towards a new avenue. “Try to see if there is something on the cornea,” she advises him. This part of the eye is often forgotten, because the majority of ophthalmological problems come from the retina or the optic nerve. By following this recommendation, the specialist finally lifts the veil on three years of medical wandering…
