In 2024, motorists could spend up to 113 hours in traffic jams in… Bordeaux. The TomTom GPS has revealed the ranking of cities where traffic is the least fluid and contrary to popular belief, Paris is no longer in the lead.
Traffic jams in city centers have further slowed traffic in several cities in France. And Paris is no longer the most congested city, it has been overtaken by Bordeaux according to the TomTom GPS traffic index.
With an average of 31 minutes and 8 seconds to cover 10 kilometers, the beautiful Endormie is the first city in France and the 24th in the world to experience the most traffic jams. Led by an environmentalist mayor, Pierre Hurmic, the city is however tending to reduce car use by making it pedestrian and creating cycle paths.
This anti-car dynamic is increasing by a drastic reduction in parking spaces but also by a lack of coordination of lights forcing people to stop regularly.
The capital is just behind in second place with 101 hours spent in traffic and 28 minutes and 53 seconds on average to complete 10 kilometers. The city led by Anne Hidalgo continues its campaign to limit cars in the city center but also on the ring road with a speed limit of 50 km/h since the end of 2024.
-Head south with Marseille and Nice in 3rd and 4th positions among the most congested cities in France. In the Marseille city, it takes 30 seconds more than in 2023 to ride 10 kilometers with an average of 27 minutes and 14 seconds and 40 seconds more in the Riviera capital with 25 minutes and 29 seconds.
And in the rest of the world?
In the national top 10, we find in order just after Nice, Nantes, Lyon, Le Havre, Nancy, Rouen and Orléans. On a European level, London, Dublin, Barcelona, Bucharest and Bordeaux hold the top 5 most congested cities.
But globally, it is in South America, in Colombia, that the traffic jam record is held with Barranquilla and its 36 minutes and 6 seconds on average to complete 10 kilometers.
