The result of several years of debate and a vote in Strasbourg, the European law on the USB C charger came into force on December 28. Consequence: all manufacturers must comply with the law passed by MEPs. In the viewfinder are smartphones, tablets, e-readers, headphones, headsets, portable speakers and even portable video game consoles. In short: all devices rechargeable via a wired cable on sale from December 28.
A small revolution even if since 2009, the market had only three types of cables, compared to around thirty previously: micro-USB, Lightning for Apple and USB-C.
This entry into force especially scratches Apple? The Giant was the only manufacturer to fiercely oppose the single charger, which prefers its lightning technology. But regardless of the American firm’s arguments, Apple complies with the law and it is for this reason that its Iphone 15 is equipped with a USB C port and cable.
This measure will save 250 million euros per year for European consumers who spend more than 2 billion euros each year on purchases of chargers. It is also a more virtuous device for reducing the share of electronic waste.
