The next “iPhone 17” series should offer significant design developments, notably with the expected “Air” model, which would be Apple’s thinnest iPhone to date. Unlike the current 16 range, the “Pro” models will also offer something to satisfy technology enthusiasts thanks to the use of Meta Lens technology to reduce the size of the Dynamic Island. Additionally, there is talk of a glass-aluminum hybrid rear design, although some sources contradict this.
A smaller Dynamic Island thanks to Meta Lens technology
Launched with the iPhone 14 Pro, the Dynamic Island was Apple’s innovative solution to replace the traditional notch. After retaining this design in the iPhone 15 and 16 series, Apple is set to refine it on the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max using Meta Lens technology. This advancement will allow a more compact Face ID module. According to MyDrivers, the new 2025 iPhones will also feature thinner bezels around the screen (again!), contributing to improved immersion, as Apple tends towards a full-screen type aesthetic (nothing to do with sunscreen).
Towards a borderless screen
Apple’s ultimate (current) goal is to achieve an all-screen front design with no borders or distractions, which means eliminating the Dynamic Island’s sensors altogether. This would require significant advances in under-display technology for sensors and cameras, preserving the integrity of Face ID.
Other changes expected on the iPhone 17 Pro
Coming back to today’s topic, the iPhone 17 Pro, it is expected to retain the triangular camera layout seen on the iPhone 16 Pro, ultimately avoiding the linear camera alignment found on some competitors like the Google Pixel. While Apple will improve the sensor capabilities of the iPhone 17 Pro, including a 48-megapixel telephoto lens, the most significant camera upgrades are planned for the iPhone 18, including a variable aperture.
Alongside these changes, the iPhone 17 range will introduce the “Air” model, aiming for a thickness less than that of the iPhone 6 from 2014. We are talking about only 6 mm, all for a 6.6 inch screen. Small hands will be further harmed, with Apple at the same time increasing the size of the standard iPhone 17 from 6.1 to 6.3 inches.
As you know, all this can still vary between now and the release, scheduled for September 2025. But, generally, the rumors are already very precise less than a year before the launch of the new iPhone.
