It's a setting worthy of the universe heroic fantasy. In Poland, on just 1.7 hectares, some 400 pines defy the laws of nature with their trunks spectacularly bent at 90 degrees, all mysteriously oriented towards the north.
A true tourist attraction, this curiosity has continued to fuel scientific debates and local legends for almost a century.
A unique phenomenon in the world
At first glance, one might believe it to be a surrealist setting. However, these octogenarian trees are very real. About 40 centimeters from the ground, each trunk forms a perfect loop before resuming vertical growthreaching heights of 11 to 12 meters. The curvature can extend up to 3 meters on some specimens, creating a landscape that seems straight out of a fantasy tale.
Located near the town of Gryfino on the German border, this forest fascinates visitors from all over the world. Its particularity? Almost perfect uniformity in the deformation of the trees, without any visible trace of human intervention. The inhabitants of the region say that their grandparents already spoke of this mystery, passed down from generation to generation like a well-kept secret.
Theories abound to explain this extraordinary phenomenon. Some suggest human intervention deliberate in the 1930s, during the German occupation, possibly for shipbuilding or furniture manufacturing. Another hypothesis suggests that World War II tanks crushed these saplings, forcing them to regrow at this particular angle.
Others think more of natural factors : a genetic mutation, a parasitic infestation, or even the combined effect of snow and wind. Finally, scientists discuss a specific silvicultural technique, similar to that used for the production of Christmas trees.
Among the others
If other “crooked” forests exist, such as the Pinatelle du Zouave in Haute-Loire, none presents such uniformity nor such mystery. The pines of French Pinatelle, twisted to fuel bakery ovens, display irregular curves and clearly bear the marks of human intervention.
What makes Krzywy Las truly unique is the complete absence of clues to explain this formation. No local archives provide an explanation and the testimonies of elders do not allow us to decide. Scientists continue their investigations, using cutting-edge technologies such as DNA analysis and dendrochronology to try to unravel this nearly century-old mystery.
Today, this extraordinary forest attracts not only curious people and photographers from around the world, but also forestry researchers who hope that solving this enigma could provide new knowledge about the growth and adaptation of trees to extreme conditions. .
