It is a little-known green space in Saint-Nazaire (Loire-Atlantique) and which should be more highlighted in the coming years. The Porcé streamwhich notably crosses the Jardins d’Océanis, will be restored thanks to a renaturation site, which will last two years and cost nearly 400 000 €.
Several areas of concern
Where is this river located? “It has its source somewhere in the bowling alley parking lot and goes down to Porcé beach, crossing the park,” explained vice-president Éric Provost, during the last community council.
Today, the creek suffers from several areas of concern.
Bodies of water have formed and alter the good hydraulic continuity of the watercourse. Rainwater inflows are also sometimes a little too rapid and also disrupt its hydraulic functioning.
The vice-president also highlights the need to restore the riverine forest of the watercourse, that is to say the vegetation which forms its edges: too dense and full of invasive species (such as Japanese knotweed or laurels), it does not leave not pass the light on the stream.
Slow down the flow
The work should bring the fauna and flora back to life. “It’s about erasing connections with other waterways.” The stream having “deepened a lot”, it descends too quickly towards the beach.
The idea is to raise the minor bed so that the water flows more gently and infiltrates the vegetation more deeply.
The project is not going to be easy, because “it is a complicated, very steep route. It will also be necessary explain the work to the population because we are going to remove trees and some vegetation to restore normal operations. But it’s very important.”
What about the development of neighboring neighborhoods?
During the council meeting, elected official Gwénolé Péronno questioned the possible consequences of the development of the Vecquerie district. “Does this impact the water quality of the stream?” “Normally no,” replied Éric Provost. “It’s true that there are a lot of new arrivals, but that’s part of the developers’ planning obligations. If there are any malfunctions, we will remedy them. We also have talked about odor problems: we think that this comes precisely from the stream and the formed bodies of water which remain stagnant”.
Two years of construction
A complementary study in 2021 showed that the work had to be even wider than planned, extending over a kilometer of length compared to 700 m initially planned. This will happen over two years, “during low water periods and excluding species reproduction”.
The budget is estimated at 370 000 €including €310,000 of work, €50,000 of project management, €10,000 of participation-awareness. La Carene benefits from two aids: €37,500 from the Water Agency and €10,000 from the Region.
