For its next iPhones, Apple may have just made the best decision of the year

A good number of fans of the Apple brand’s products must surely save for a while to be able to obtain the new annual iPhone. The iPhone 16 Pro Max still costs €1,479 in its 256 GB version, while the standard iPhone 16 can also exceed €1,000. Even ten years ago, it was unthinkable to see a smartphone sold at such a price. It is now a standard. Apple continues to sell iPhones like hotcakes year after year, proof that the public has become accustomed to paying such a sum for a new iPhone. However, the Cupertino company thought about reviewing its economic model for a while…

Apple would have definitively abandoned its monthly iPhone subscription system

Apple has been considering offering the iPhone in the form of a monthly subscription since 2022. A user could have chosen to pay for access to their smartphone each month rather than purchasing it by paying the entire price at the time of purchase. The subscription had to be managed through an Apple account and use the payment method already stored in your account. The American company believed that a monthly subscription would push more users to migrate to the latest iPhone, a way to increase its revenue.

Bloomberg reports that Apple no longer wants to implement this system. The American media indicates that the Apple brand should have “followed the same regulations as credit card companies” as for Apple Pay Later, which it did not wish to do.

In addition, the subscription would have conflicted with offers from T-Mobile or Verizon. Telephone operators already offer an installment payment plan to get an iPhone 16. This differs from a subscription in form, but the principle which requires paying the same amount monthly is quite similar. Subscriptions of this type are often criticized because in some cases the user never owns their product and simply pays for a user license or temporary access to a service or device.
