An internal Google source revealed to Android Authority the details of the Pixel Tablet 2, a now abandoned project which was to succeed the tablet launched in 2022. This cancellation is all the more surprising since Google had planned specific modifications to the Tensor G6 processor for 2027, suggesting long-term plans for its tablet line.
Codenamed “kiyomi”, this new tablet was to feature the Google Tensor G4 processor, the last SoC designed in collaboration with Samsung before moving to entirely internal production with the Tensor G5. The chip would have used an IPoP variant, similar to that of the Pixel 9a, offering a more economical but slightly less efficient solution than the standard FOPLP version.
One of the major improvements planned was the integration of an Exynos 5400 5G modemidentical to that of the Pixel 9 series, accompanied by GPS for the cellular version. Connectivity also included support for the Thread protocol for wearables, although this feature currently remains inactive on the Pixel 9.
The Pixel Tablet 2 would have had a much better screen
The 10.95-inch LCD screen retained its definition of 2560 x 1600but moved to a 120Hz refresh ratethus correcting one of the main criticisms of its predecessor. Maximum brightness increased slightly from 500 to 550 nits.
The photo system should also benefit from notable improvements. The front camera upgraded to a 10 MP Samsung S5K3K1 sensor, while the rear module upgraded to an 11 MP Samsung S5K3J1 with autofocus, a significant improvement over the original model’s 8 MP Sony IMX355 sensors.
Other planned new features included DisplayPort 4K output and new official accessoriesincluding a dedicated keyboard and stylus. These accessories could theoretically be adapted to the original Pixel Tablet.
Although these improvements are not revolutionary, they would have corrected the main defects of the first model. It is therefore a shame to know that this tablet is no longer in the pipeline at Google. The cancellation of this project obviously raises questions about the future of the range, even if rumors suggest that an even more ambitious Pixel Tablet 3 is still in development.
