Since 2016, the so-called headphones True Wireless (or 100% wireless) have established themselves. Initially basic, they now embrace new audio standards, are Dolby Atmos and Bluetooth 5.3 compatible for a sound immersion that has had no equivalent until now. And the quality of their noise reduction, if it is more or less efficient depending on the model, has become one of their arguments. Which model to choose according to your budget? 20 Minutes tested three pairs at 149 euros, 199 euros and 299 euros.
For their iconic look: AirPods 4, from Apple
Reasonably priced Apple headphones? Possible, with the AirPods 4, launched at the beginning of fall! Available with or without noise reduction, they use the codes (often imitated) of Apple headphones since 2016 with their varnished white color and their small emblematic stem, whose ergonomics have been corrected.
Recommended for iPhone owners and, moreover, Apple Music subscribers, these Bluetooth 5.3 headphones are spatial audio compatible. Implicitly, listening to countless titles with an expanded soundstage, and tracking head movements. It is also possible to answer a call by nodding “yes” and reject one by saying… “no”! What remains is a good listen, with correctly balanced treble, midrange and bass.
Please note, in the so-called “open fit” format, these headphones sit at the entrance to the ear canal, but do not sink into it. If, for some, their use may seem less annoying after several hours of listening, their “physical” insulation is therefore reduced.
The possibility of choosing them in their version with active noise reduction (for an investment of 50 additional euros) may not be completely justified, as their format ultimately does not lend itself quite well to this technical proposition which can, here, be disappointing.
Little extra: these headphones integrate Apple’s Find function which allows you to find them anywhere from an iPhone.
Battery life: up to 5 hours advertised + 5 charges.
Protection: IP54 (resistance to dust and splashing water)
149 euros (199 euros with noise reduction).
For their performance/price ratio: Elite 10 Gen 2, from Jabra
Discreet with their stemless design, the Jabra Elite 10 Gen 2 adopt the latest Bluetooth standard, here in version 5.3.
Dolby Atmos compatible, with a head tracking functionality (thanks to which the artist listened to always remains in the same – virtual – place when you move your head), they have physical buttons. This is a point to consider when purchasing, compared to the touch controls of other headphones.
To customize using their application which has a five-band equalizer, the Elite 10 Gen 2 mark their territory with its very generous and rare balance. Six presets are offered, plus a seventh to customize. Relevant in the street, their noise reduction is not as effective as that of Sony headphones (WF-1000XM5) or Bose (QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds) to really isolate the user on public transport, too bad.
The case, which offers up to three successive recharges, can connect to an analog source using a cable provided to serve as a transmitter to the headphones.
These headphones (the last marketed by Jabra, which is unfortunately abandoning this part of its activity), were launched at 279 euros. Their repositioning below the 200 euro mark only strengthens their appeal. They are available in five colors, including a very elegant “Cocoa”.
Autonomy: up to 8 hours announced + 3 charges.
Protection: IP56 (resistance to dust and high pressure water splashes).
199 euros.
For their innovative case: Tour Pro 3, from JBL
The JBL LE Tour Pro 3 Bluetooth 5.3 headphones are notable for their 44mm touchscreen charging case. This allows you to leave your smartphone in your pocket: most of the settings are accessible there (apart from the personalized equalizer, which requires using the JBL Headphones application).
Another attraction: the box can act as a Bluetooth transmitter to the headphones. You can connect an audio player to it from a 3.5 mm mini-jack socket (cable provided). Practical on a plane, for example.
When listened to, the Tour Pro 3 offers great energy, with dynamics boosted by powerful bass that will appeal to the youngest. But they can also invite themselves to the table of more audiophile registers. Six equalization modes are offered (Studio, Bass, Extrem Bass, Vocal, Jazz), plus personal equalization. Note here the possibility of perfectly adapting the reproduction to your ear after carrying out a short test in two minutes (Personi-Fi function). Depending on your hearing, certain adaptations (reinforcement of certain sounds) may be made.
Wearing the Tour Pro 3 is quite pleasant and the physical insulation provided is perfect. You can also choose classic silicone or foam tips, which are even more insulating.
Battery life: up to 11 hours advertised + 3 charges.
Protection: IP55 (resistance to dust and low pressure water splashes)
299 euros.
