Apple is reportedly planning to equip its AirPods with built-in cameras within two years, according to Ming-Chi Kuo, a closely watched Apple analyst.

According to its sources from Apple’s supply chain in Asia, these new AirPods would have infrared cameras similar to those used in the iPhone’s Face ID facial recognition system. What is the point of installing a camera on a set of AirPods?

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, these AirPods will likely be used with the Vision Pro and future mixed reality headsets to improve audio spatialization. The AirPods Pro, AirPods Max, and third-generation AirPods already offer a spatial audio option.

The AirPods’ infrared cameras would react to how the user moves, Kuo explains. For example, if you turn your head to look in a different direction, the sound coming from that direction will be amplified. With the Vision Pro, it would also be possible to use contactless air gestures to control the sound.

« Apple’s planning for hardware, software and services has always been focused on strengthening the competitiveness of the ecosystem, and spatial computing is no exception. “, writes the analyst. ” As the commercialization conditions for spatial computing develop in the future, Apple, which has a significant lead in this area, is expected to generate new and strong growth momentum. »

Foxconn, Apple’s supplier and subcontractor, will manufacture the infrared camera in question with a target of 18 to 20 million units, or about 10 million AirPods. The actual supply will naturally depend on demand and market conditions.
