Garmin launches new beta for mid-range smartwatches with new improvements and fixes

Garmin has increased the frequency of beta update releases for its Instinct 2 series smartwatches. As a reminder, the company shared beta version 16.06 a little over a week ago, all the details of which we covered separately. While beta version 16.06 brought some bug fixes to all Instinct 2 series smartwatches, including the Instinct Crossover (currently $449.99 on Amazon), it didn’t introduce many changes considering the nearly month-long gap between the introduction of beta version 16.02 and beta version 16.07.

The new Beta 16.07 version follows the same path. In a forum post, Garmin explains that the new update would have only reached 20% of eligible smartwatches. That said, other devices should receive a notification to download Beta 16.07 within the next 24 hours, provided they have been enrolled in Garmin’s Beta program. You can also trigger the download of the latest beta using the company’s Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) and Garmin Express services.

Like the Fenix 7 series before it, Garmin claims to have only made various bug fixes and improvements to the Instinct 2 series. However, it remains to be seen if any of these are user-facing. Please check out Garmin’s forum post and Beta Bug Reports page for more details. For reference, Garmin claims to have made the following changes from version 15.08, the most recent stable update for the series, to beta 16.07:

Shared changelog:

  • Fixed an issue where the time on the Battery Saver watch face was not updating correctly.
  • Fixed an issue where the inReach screen could display after using the Health Monitoring app.
  • Fixed an issue where data could be hidden on the activity summary page.
  • Fixed an issue where the high/low temperature could be truncated on the Morning Report page.
  • Fixed an issue where the cooldown time for block climbing could be truncated.
  • Fixed an issue where the force activity timer could be truncated.
  • Fixed an issue with the Sight ‘N Go keyboard shortcut when used outside of an Activity.

  • Fixed an issue with CIQ watch faces in the Watch Faces menu.
