BananaBin (free during beta) is a utility that falls into the category of useless, therefore essential. Once installed on your Mac, it monitors the amount of items stored in the macOS trash and if it exceeds a certain threshold, it adds flies around the trash icon. These flies fly around the icon, a way cute to remind you that you must Also empty the recycle bin on your computer, at least from time to time.

The idea is fun and the app offers a setting so that the flies appear quickly (as soon as 10 MB are stored in the trash) or on the contrary if you have deleted large files and they are still stored in the trash (from 1 or even 10 GB). Without being a source of distraction such that the Mac becomes unusable, the animation draws the eye to the trash, which makes it a fairly effective reminder… in any case, if your Dock is visible and not too small.

BananaBin is currently in beta, and it shows. There are still several significant limitations, including the inability to activate when the deleted files come from iCloud Drive or an external storage volume (this should come in a future update). I also noticed that the app doesn’t work on multiple virtual desktops, only on the one it’s opened on. On the other hand, it does respond correctly to different Dock positions as well as to options like maximize on hover.

To work, BananaBin needs full disk access to know when files are in the trash as well as Accessibility to locate the icon position and especially modify it. The app is free during the beta, although you have to leave your email address to get the download link. The final version should be paid, without having the details for the moment.

BananaBin is only available in English and the app requires macOS Sonoma and only this version for the moment. Compatibility with macOS Ventura is planned.
