Ahead of the ceremony, FromSoftware is obviously making a lot of noise for the nomination of Shadow of the Erdtree. A choice of the committee which has caused a lot of ink to flow.
Elden Ring, the Almighty
In 2022, Elden Ring was released and caused a commercial and media buzz in a way that few video games do. The biggest success of the fromSoftware studio with tens of millions of sales, the fascinating and intimidating open world of the game, co-written by the man behind Game of Thrones, was talked about for months and months on all the forums of social networks on the web. Even if he was facing a certain God of War: Ragnarok, Elden Ring won the Game Awards 2022 by winning the GOTY title, but also that of best production, best artistic direction and best RPG.
It was not only at the Game Awards that the software shone, since we have another game of the year award at the Golden Joystick Awards, at the DICE Awards while he was even invited to the French Pégase 2023 ceremony, with the prize for best foreign game. In short, Elden Ring was an undeniable steamroller… and its expansion seems to have the same scope.
Elden Ring x2
Given gaming's monumental impact on the industry, it stood to reason that its Shadow of the Erdtree extension was awaited like the messiah by a huge community: it offered itself in June 2024, once again causing frenzy and excitement. UA project of enormous scale, certainly, but which nonetheless remains a DLC… which did not prevent the Game Awards committee from nominating him again for the 2024 ceremony alongside titles that are indeed complete.
And that, of course, causes (a lot) of talk. How is it that the expansion of a game, no matter how good it is, can be compared and competed against Astro Bot, Black Myth: Wukong, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Astro Bot, Metaphor: ReFantazio and Balatro for the title of best game of the year? And so, why keep the name of the “game” of the year for this category?
Enough to fuel debates again and again, but one thing is certain: fromSoftware has certainly made the history of the ceremony, even before the results fall. Incidentally, remember that the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is also nominated in the categories of best direction, best artistic direction and best RPG. The Game Awards 2024 will be held on December 13.
