There was a time when Sony was a step ahead of cloud gaming: after having bought Gaikai and transformed it into PlayStation Now in 2014, players then had the possibility of playing an entire catalog of PS4 games directly in streaming and even on PC, without needing a PS4. A service which was added to Remote Play and which today seems to take on a whole new scale thanks to this update of the PlayStation Portalwhich could well finally find particular interest in the famous accessory of the Japanese giant
For many, the release of PS Portal A year ago was a dead end. : it was in no way a games console, but rather an accessory for PS5 solely dedicated to remote play, therefore requiring an internet connection… and especially the said white monolith. Impossible to run titles natively – although some hackers have managed to play PSP games – or even to play cloud gaming via the PS Plus.
More Sony seems to want to make the most of the capabilities of its device and announces the deployment today of an update for the PlayStation Portalallowing you to play games PS5 “streaming in the cloud”, without the need for PS5 on hand. However, there are some restrictions at the moment: you must be a subscriber to the PlayStation Plus Premium and as it is only a beta, not all the games in the catalog are yet compatible. Sony however confirms the availability of more than 120 games PS5, “notably Dave The Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise et Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart.”
Another nice surprise, but the hardware functions of the DualSense available on the PS Portali.e. haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, are also compatible with this cloud gaming. As for the maximum graphics quality, it is the 1080p/60 FPS combo, in any case the technical limit of the accessory. For 720p streaming, a connection of at least 7 Mbit/s is required; for 1080p, we are talking about 13 Mbit/s at least.
A beta which should develop gradually
Note that as this is only a beta, certain features are currently unavailable such as the trial version of games, streaming of games purchased on the PS StoreParty voice chat and game invitations, Creation Touch, 3D audio and in-game purchases. We are therefore not yet on a real PS5 Portable, but Sony does not seem to be closing the door to the later arrival of these specific features. On the other hand, the firm declares that “streaming games playable on PS Portal will be exclusively PS5 games” and that “PS4/PS3 games are not supported.” Damage.
Finally, let us point out that the update optimizes the audio rendering of the PlayStation Portalfirstly by adjusting the speaker output so that the volume is lower when it is set to minimum, and also by adjusting the device settings PlayStation Link to adjust the overall and sidetone volume.
