A more affordable VR headset from Valve
For years now, rumors have been swirling about a new headset about which we don’t know much: a code name (“Deckard”), the possibility of using it wirelessly, and Valve’s desire to address to a wider audience — in other words, lowering the price. If we don’t have any news about this device, the controllers that will accompany it will soon be produced in volume.
Brad Lynch, a keen observer of all things Valve, spoke to his sources. According to the latter, the controllers, called “Roy”, would be at a “ advanced stage » of production in the factories of Valve subcontractors. From here to saying that the headset which will accompany these controllers is also in this same advanced phase, there is only a very small step.
The same leaker dove into the SteamVR code a few days ago to unearth some additional information. The controllers would incorporate four action buttons, triggers, side buttons, a D-Pad, system buttons, as well as a strap and a spatial hand tracking system. These peripherals could also serve as standard Steam controllers when not used in VR.
And precisely, since we’re talking about controllers, Brad Lynch has also heard that a second generation of Steam Controller (codenamed “Ibex”) was at the same production level as VR controllers. The previous generation was marketed between 2015 and 2019; it was a commercial flop, but Valve was able to experiment with what would become the Steam Deck controls.
And now that the Steam Deck has become the success it is, Valve probably feels it’s time to put the hardware into overdrive… and why not bring Steam Machines back into the spotlight? These consoles for the living room bowed out in 2018, but the idea remains good!
