Usually a monster eats a lot. However, Sony's new PlayStation knows how to make efforts for our planet.

Better, faster, stronger ?

After months of rumors and an official announcement that caused a lot of talk, the PlayStation 5 Pro has been available in for more than a week. More powerful than the base PS5this console has a major argument that is easy to guess: first party and third party titles will be more beautiful and more fluid than on any other machine on the market. At least that's the promise. Since its release, however, players have noticed display issues linked to a PSSR which sometimes delivers an unsightly result on the screen, like what we can see with Star Wars Jedi Survivor from Electronic Arts. The PS5 Pro builds on what Mark Cerny calls the “big three”, namely a powerful graphics processor, more advanced ray tracing than what we currently have on consoles, and the famous PSSR which strives to make the image sharper than ever, with more or less success. Like NVIDIA's DLSS and AMD's FSR, it is an upscaling technology which consists of generating a high resolution image from a lower resolution image. On paper, this helps reduce GPU workload.

High performance, high price! Sold for 799 euros here, the console generated many negative comments on social networks. The most unfortunate thing is that at this price, the hardware does not offer an optical drive. If you want to enjoy your lovely Blu-rays, you will need to connect an additional player, sold for 120 euros. The good news is that the characteristics of the PS5 Pro do not make the machine more demanding.

Higher price, not like consumption

Digital Foundry experts, specialized in the hardware and technical elements of our video games, carried out a battery of tests on the latest PlayStation launched by Sony. Among them, we find a study of energy consumption, carried out on different games, including Elden Ring and Marvel's Spider-Man 2. The results show that in quality mode, the PS5 Pro consumes as much as the PlayStation 5 Slim while offering significantly superior performance on the screen. Digital Foundry also adds that, even compared to the basic PS5, the consumption of the PS5 Pro is extremely efficient since it consumes approximately the same amount of energy, despite the improvements made in the games.

We recall that in the past, Digital Foundry revealed that the console was equipped with an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 8-core/16-thread processor with a graphics engine based on RDNA producing 16.7TF of GPU computing performance, compared to 10.23TF of the classic PS5. In addition to 16 GB of GDDR6 memory, the PS5 Pro has 2 GB of DDR5 memory.
